Girth update

Well it has been 3 weeks and 4-1/2 days since Lisa and began operation girth control.  I am happy to report we are still on the wagon and both have lost what I consider a fair amount of weight.  I'm down a few 10th of a pound shy of 15 pounds and Lisa...well, I'm not going to announce that.  What, you think I was born yesterday?  I like how my head sits squarely on my shoulders.  First rule of living with a woman is the never and I mean never discuss weight loss, what their weight is or anything specific to the topic to anyone.  But I will say, I am proud of her for sticking with it and losing what she has lost.

We've a few really crazy recipes like cauliflower pizza crust (not bad tasting but not even close to the texture of pizza crust).  We've also stumbled upon some pretty good ones too like a chicken cous cous dish with zucchini  that's really tasty and relatively low in calories.

The hardest thing for me is that sweet sweet homebrew I have sitting on tap at the basement bar.  I've not had a homebrew since opening day and I am dying for one.  I may just have to partake one day this weekend and work it off on the elliptical.  We will see...

We decided, against better judgment I think, to schedule a family vacation this summer.  We ended up renting a condo in Hilton Head this year.  We've done the Myrtle Beach scene several times in the past and wanted to change it up a bit.  Hilton Head can't be anywhere as congested as MB and from what I hear, it is much more laid back and less touristy.  We also like to explore areas within an hour drive when we vacation and Savannah, Georgia is about 25 miles from where we're staying.  I've heard great things about Savannah.  Our condo is relatively close to the beach too and we have a pool directly off our first floor condo.  I'm sure it will be hotter than hell but that's the fun of summer vacations.  I'm hoping to be down a total of 40-45 pounds before we leave.

Girth Control

Well, Lisa and I have gone on girth control.  If you like the little play on words, you can thank Lisa's dad Ted for that one.  I think its funny because I look like I'm pregnant which would mean the girth control method I was previously using failed and now I'm in big trouble.  I guess shoveling everything in sight is not a very good girth control method.  So my morning after pill if you will is a website called my fitness pal

The premise of the website is it provides tools to track calorie consumption, exercise and to log your process.  The fun part of the website is that it also has an application for your smart phone.  Logging everything you eat and tracking all your physical activities makes dieting more like a game.  The app is so cool; it even has a bar code scanner.  All you have to do is scan what you're eating and enter how much you consumed and it logs the calories and nutritional value for that food.

So far Lisa and I have been on the new girth control for 8 days and I've lost nearly 6 pounds and Lisa has dropped 3.  Of course the difference in weight loss other than the gender thing is that I weigh much more than she does and it comes off quicker.  Hell, I have to burn twice as many calories as she does just walking across the room since I am carrying quads and she only has one in the oven.  I have a soft goal of 40 pounds and an overall goal of 60 pounds while Lisa is only trying to lose about 20.

The biggest issue I have is the 15 gallons of homebrew I have sitting on tap in the basement.  I've only allowed myself a single homebrew in at least 8 days and that was after I spent 40 minutes on a elliptical.  I burned nearly 700 calories  so I figured a beer wouldn't hurt me.  Unfortunately, my opening day festivities are on Friday and they include large amounts of beer.  Looks like I will have to stick to Miller Lite and watch what I eat.  I don't think that keeping under 1200 calories will be part of my Friday plans but I will try and keep a handle on the beer and food consumption.  I can always spend my entire Saturday on the elliptical.

Chicago Update

Well if you couldn't tell, we were on our three night spring break trip/Shawn's birthday trip in Chicago last week.  Lisa, Shawn, Katie, Bev, Ted and I ended up arriving at our condo on Tuesday close to noon and were able to get into it early since Monday was the one day for the entire month of March that the condo wasn't booked.  I enjoy visiting larger cities like Chicago but I'm not sure I could every live the downtown big city life.  Maybe I could have about 20 years ago but as I get older I think I really like the idea of having a yard and being able to move at my own pace.  Big city living with children seems like a difficult undertaking too.

The condo was right in the heart of all the touristy things to do in Chicago and was located on the 52nd floor of an older condo building but the condo itself was nicely updated.  The views were pretty amazing, especially at night.  The condo was just the right size for six people and we even had Brad come for a one night stay.

Since it was Shawn's birthday, the trip couldn't be complete without a couple of trips to the Lego store to spend all the money he had been saving and received for his birthday.  I've never need a 10 year old who's been more obsessed with all things Lego.  Not to leave Katie out, we also made 3 trips (2 resulted in major tantrums) to the American Girl Store.  Yes, Katie had some birthday money to spend as well and bought a bitty baby.  American Girl is the biggest gold mine of a fad store I've ever seen.  As soon as you get within about 500 feet of the place all you see is little girls holding their dolls making a bee-line to the store.  I don't think you can get out of the store without spending at least $50.

Other point of interest we visited were Shedd's Aquarium, Chinatown and the every popular Billy Goat Tavern.  We did a lot of walking up and down Michigan avenue and also ate at Chicago institutions such as Portillos, McDonald's and Gino's East as well as a pretty nice beer and BBQ bar called Jake Melnick's corner tap.  We would have had lunch in Chinatown but Shawn will not even think about eating Chinese food for some reason.  I guess now that he's seen hanging ducks and live eels in Chinese grocery stores, who could blame him.

All in all a nice trip except for the 40 pound 4 year old that seemed to be on my shoulders all the time.

We returned home on Friday and pretty much took it easy the rest of the weekend.  This weekend seems to be shaping up as a pretty quiet one as well.  Katie has a birthday party to attend on Thursday and I have a local business expo to attend for four hours on Saturday but other than than, nothing is on the agenda that I know of.

The next big trip will be opening day for me.  Yes, it is that time of year for the, what I think is the 15 annual, trip to The Tribe's opening day.  This year, we have several additions attending due to a couple of 2nd weddings happening this summer and fall.  I'm looking forward to hanging out with some long lost friends and celebrating the unofficial beginning of summer.  Not to mention we have pretty good seats this year...first row in the upper deck along the first base line.  Hopefully the weather cooperates.  This year's festivities we originally slated to last two days, one for opening day and one for my friend Jeff's second time around bachelor party but we cut the bachelor party idea and we're back to one day of debauchery.

Well, that's enough of an update for now.  Have a great week.
