Photo post

Hello everyone!  Not much time to post anything lately.  Work is in full out Christmas mode but we did manage to get away for a couple of days to attend a wedding in Wisconsin this past week and to go to a Halloween party.

Here are a few pictures from our recent adventures:

Brewing Marathon

Here's a video of yeast working on the 35 gallons of beer Lisa's brother Brad and I brewed on Saturday.  A 12 hour marathon that will produce enough beer for family and friends to drink until the spring.  Did I mention that the aroma and flavoring hops were all grown in Brad's backyard?

80's Dance Party

Here's some pictures of our 80's dance party we went to on Friday night.  We even cranked out the cheap beer....Natural Light for the party.  I drank a ton of Natural Light as well as Old Milwaukee in the late 80's.  Our motto was always quantity over quality when it came to beer.

New York and Philadelphia trip

Last Wednesday morning  Lisa, Shawn and I jumped in the car for the 8 hour drive to Philadelphia.  We made it to our hotel near the King of Prussia Mall about 10 miles from downtown at about 4:00pm and then rushed to see the historical sites before everything closed for the evening.  Unfortunately, we didn't have much time to explore downtown Philadelphia but we did manage to see the Liberty Bell, Freedom Hall, the first house of congress, Betsy Ross' home, the cemetery where Ben Franklin is buried and we made it to the mecca of the Cheese steak.  The walk from the historical area to the area in the Italian Market area where Gino's and Pat's was about half a mile but since we were in Philly we had to sample the famous Philadelphia Cheese Steak.  But since I taste tested both establishments, you don't have to.   Neither Pat's or Gino's were close to spectacular.  Both use the same bun, Gino's uses sliced beef while Pat's beef is chopped up.  Both offer a choice of American, Provolone and Cheese Wiz (they call it Wiz) but Pat's does offer a few variations such as extra meat, or with mushrooms.  At Gino's we split a Provolone with (means sandwich with onions and provolone) and at Pat's we went with the more traditional Wiz with.  The winner was definitely Pat's.  I wish I would have ordered at Gino's with Wiz so I was comparing apples to apples because I think the Wiz actually made the difference.

We never made it to the mall but from what I hear and what I could see, it is one of the largest malls in the U. S.   We did make it to a Rock Bottom for a late night dinner though which was connected to the mall.

Thursday morning, I had a meeting with one of our larger customers that went very well and then off to the train station to pick up an Amtrak train into New York Penn Station.  The train ride was enjoyable and is relatively short (1 hour 20 minutes).  Our hotel was only a few blocks from the train station and we were able to check in right away which was a plus.  We wandered around a bit and ended up at the Harry Potter exhibit at The Discovery Museum at Times Square.  The exhibit was a bit on the pricy side; I think it was in the neighborhood of $85 for the three of us and it took us about 1-1/2 hour to tour it.  There was a ton of props and costumes from the movie to check out and of course a gift shop at the end.  How do they get away with charging $40 for a plastic replica wand that doesn't even cast spells?  After the exhibit, we wandered around times square and Rockefeller Center then ate at Bill's Bar and Burgers.  Burger were pretty tasty and the beer wasn't bad either.  I found a local beer call Pork Slap Pale ale that was tasty.  We wandered around a bit more and then headed back to the hotel to prepare for the marathon on Friday.

Friday morning we headed down to Central Park at 6am for the Good Morning America concert featuring the American Idol finalists.  It was pretty interesting watching the television production.  Funny how the stage manager would cue the audience to cheer and clap.  Unfortunately, we only really heard 4 songs that they ended up singing over and over again for the television audience.  We then strolled through the park and then took a subway to the World Trade Center Site.  We ended up walking from the WTC to Battery Park to Wall Street to South Street Seaport to Chinatown over to Chelsea Market, shopping in Soho and then hopped a subway back to Rockefeller Center and the Lego store.  I think we must have walked 15 miles that day.  We headed back to the room to relax a bit and then wandered around some more looking for a restaurant that peaked our interest.  We ended up in some bar a few blocks from Times Square and had just an okay meal.  Finally as we walked through Times Square heading back to the room, we had a portrait done of Shawn by an older Oriental guy who did a really nice job.  We did get taken a bit.  The price started at $5 for a quick caricature to a $40 charcoal portrait with matting.

Saturday was the train back to Philadelphia and back in the car for the long haul home.  We made it home just before 1am on Sunday morning.  Sunday was recovery day to say the least.

Yesterday, we started Cody on allergy shots.  I have to give him two shots currently every other day and as the concentration of the shot and amount increase I give them to him less frequently.  Eventually we will work him up to two shots every 30 days.  The first set of shots I purchased will last about 8 months and were a mere $229.  I'll pay the $229 on the dog if it means he will stop scratching so had he bleeds and tracks it all over the house!

Shawn's first day of 5th grade was today and his first day of being a latch key kid!  He was actually excited to go to school and see his friends.  I'm sure the excitement will end tonight when he has his first homework assignment.

Friday, Lisa and I have an 80's dance to attend.  We are dressing up retro and will try to post some pictures next week.  I bought a new pair of boat shoes, some plaid shorts and a couple of rather loud polo shirts that I will layer and turn the color up on.  Lisa's outfit is every changing so I'm not sure what she'll end up with other than rubber band bracelets and Madonna style fingerless gloves.  I should be fun.

New York and Philadelphia trip pictures are located here.

Busy weekend

We started this past weekend on Friday by taking the day off and dropping the kids off at Bev and Ted's.  Since we had a wedding to attend on Saturday in Columbus we decided to take a nice leisurely drive to Lisa's favorite city in Ohio by way of US-127.  US-127 is the road that the worlds longest garage sale (or as I like to say garbage) is located.  The sales start in Hudson, Michigan and wind their way down to somewhere in Alabama.  All I can say is wow!  We ended up taking 127 for about 40 miles of so and I'd bet we passed at least 500 garage sales.  There was entirely too much stopping and going for me and I think Lisa even was a bit disappointed with the items most people were selling.  The sales, from what we saw, were mostly of antiques and GARBAGE!  We both agreed that we wouldn't go out of our way to attend this one again.

We stayed at a hotel in the Easton shopping center in Columbus on Friday.  Once we did a little wandering through the stores, we cleaned up and headed over to a bar called Adobe Gila's to see a singer Lisa remembered from her college days named Chris Logsdon.  The beer was nice and cold and the music wasn't too bad either!

Saturday, we checked out of the hotel and headed out for breakfast and for more shopping and eventually headed over to the hotel we were staying in for the wedding in Worthington.  The wedding was a blast. I saw several friends from high school that I don't see very often and I'm sure a couple of us made fools of ourselves.  That's what will happen when you have a bunch of 40 somethings trying to party like they are 25.  I, fortunately and more likely due to Lisa, I didn't have any ill effects that evening or the next morning.  I guess the party spilled into the hotel bar after the reception was over.  All in all, a really fun time and a good wedding to boot.

Sunday was yard work and getting settled back at home.  This week, Lisa, Shawn and I are heading to Philadelphia (quick customer meeting for me) and then off to New York via train for a couple of days.  I just found out today that the Harry Potter traveling museum is in New York now...guess who's going to see that exhibit?

Oh yeah, one other item of sad note.  I finally did the thing I said I never would do.  I opened up a Facebook account.  I'm not a big fan of Facebook due to the privacy issues with it and I have fought opening an account for the past two years or so but I'm working toward getting my Fraternity back on my college campus and Facebook appears to be a good communication tool to keep others updated to the status of where we are in the process.  I just hope I don't have stalkers find me or psychopaths from years gone by.  So far I've been contacted by one person that I went to high school with but have no idea who he is and another girl that went to my high school or still does (she is really young looking if it is her in her profile picture) who I also don't know.  The only other disturbing friend request would be from the son of my assistant; I just received this one about 2 minutes ago and I'm not sure how to react to it.  I guess its just another reason why I've resisted up to this point.

Gremlins

This past weekend has been hectic to say the very least.  The house appears to have been hit by lightning on Friday.  We came home from work to a list of blown electronics.  The list includes:  two garage door openers, two televisions, two DVD players, the alarm system, the irrigation system, a wireless router, network card on the desktop, an ipod docking station, our stereo receiver that controls the whole house audio system, three phones, an answering machine, one ground fault protected electrical outlet, a cable box and of all things a control box to our electric recliner motors on the couch in the basement.

Needless to say, talking to insurance agents is not one of my favorite things nor is scheduling repairs.  I also have an electrician coming to the house today to check out the system and to make sure there aren't any other issues that will cause me problems down the road.

Lisa did however manage to have 4 of Katie's friends over for a couple of house to play.  I did manage to make myself scarce for all but about 10 minutes.  The girls all seemed to have had a great time.

Vacation Pictures

Here's our Hilton Head vacation pictures

The answer to the question of how hot can it get today.......

I told you it was Hell's weather

This was taken at lunch time.  The hottest part of the day has been around 5 pm so I wonder how much hotter it will get today.

On another note, my electric bill came today and my bill was $293.41 and we were gone on vacation for 8 days when the air conditioner wasn't being utilized.  We keep the house at 75-76 degrees when we're awake and at home but warmer at other times.  Anyone have me beat at $293.41?

Satan called and they want their weather back in Hell

I can't believe the heat this summer.  I absolutely love when the temperatures are in the 90's; its just a preview of what I can expect when I eventually leave the living and end up where I'm sure I will be in the after-life.  I thought it was hot in Hilton Head but this is much hotter.  It sure beats the nasty Northwest Ohio winters and I'll take the heat over the sub zero wind chills any day.

We've had a really busy summer so far and it doesn't look like it's getting any less busy.  This weekend is probably the only one that doesn't have something going on.  Our town is having what they call Pizza-paloosa this weekend that we may try to brave the heat and attend on Friday.  Pizza isn't really on the diet but a piece or two won't hurt me.  Our busy schedule has caused the diet to stall a bit.  I have been able to maintain the 32 pound loss but I've hit a serious plateau.  I really want to lose another 20 or so pounds; once the kids go back to school I will hit it hard again.  Not that I'm eating like a pig but the weekends tend to be a little less diet friendly than they should be.  Saturday Shawn is taking a golf lesson that includes a 9 hole round after the lesson.  If he does well at the lesson and it isn't too hot, I may take him on the course.  We will see how crowded the course is too before we make the decision to play.  Katie is also having four of her friends from daycare over for a few hours on Saturday too.  Those are pretty much the big plans for the weekend.  I may try to brew too but may pass on that if it's too crazy hot.

I've been meaning to post the vacation pictures but it's a bit time consuming so I haven't done it yet.  I will try and make that happen soon.  I didn't even blog about it but it was so miserable with the kids acting up I didn't want to re-live the hell.

Next week the U.S. Senior Open is in town.  I have two weekly grounds passes.  I will be sneaking away from work every chance I get next week and hope to attend at least one day next weekend.  I then have a quick overnight trip to Orlando for work on Monday.  The following weekend is a wedding in Columbus for one of my oldest friends Jeff and then the following week I have an appointment in Philadelphia to meet one of our biggest customers.  I'm going to take Lisa and Shawn along to the Philadelphia trip and extend it a couple of extra days.  Our plan is to stay a night in Philadelphia and then hop the train to Manhattan.  The following week, Shawn starts school already.  Yep, the middle of August he starts school.

I love my new lawn mower and so do the neighbors.  I got to use it last weekend (it probably didn't need to be cut) and I had two neighbors come over to look at it.  One of the neighbors almost tripped he was walking so fast to see it.  It's a pretty strange phenomena to talk to two neighbors in the same month in my neighborhood let alone two in one day.  The mower hauls and cuts nice.  It took a bit of getting use to the controls and the heaviness of the mower when you turn.  The thing weighs 350 pounds...good work out for me.

Happy Birthday Dad...we miss you terribly!

quickie

We are alive, I just haven't either been moved to blog or had the time.  Vacation was as good as it can be with an opinionated 4 year old and a 10 year old that wished we were in Myrtle Beach.  The lawn tractor is officially dead....blown motor.  I absolutely hate making a major purchase for something like a lawn mower or tractor so I've been struggling with what the buy.  I think I'm leaning toward an extra wide (33") walk behind.  The walk behinds always cut the grass nicer than tractors and my rear-end could use the exercise.  The past two or three weeks have been horrible for dieting but I've managed to pretty much still be on track.  I only gained about 4 pounds on vacation and took it all back off to only gain it back over the past 5 days or so.  I think the secret to losing weight and keeping it off is to lay off the beer.

I have plenty of pictures to post of vacation and other things we've done since I last posted but they will have to wait a bit I'm afraid.

Here's a link to a few pictures from this past weekend.  Brad visited from Chicago.  We caught a Mud Hen's game and just had a nice relaxing couple of days.  It was Harry Potter day at the game though as you will be able to tell from the pictures.  I also added several more pictures in Katie's file on the right.
